PSG Overcomes Marseille on Penalties to Secure Trophee des Champions Season-Opening Trophy in the Middle East.

PSG players celebrating

PSG has now secured the prestigious cup on fourteen separate occasions.

The Parisian giants needed a stoppage-time leveler followed by a perfect penalty shootout to overcome their arch-rivals in the Gulf and secure a fourth straight French Super Cup title.

The European champions appeared to be sailing towards a straightforward win in the match between the French league champions and the French Cup holders after Ousmane Dembele opened the net in the opening stages.

Yet, Marseille fired twice in the closing moments to take a surprise lead. First, the English forward converted from the spot-kick, before the defender inadvertently directed the ball into his own net for an own goal.

In a breathtaking turn of events, Goncalo Ramos grabbed a crucial leveler in the dying moments to send the contest into a deciding shootout. The Parisian shot-stopper Lucas Chevalier then stood as the key figure, stopping decisive kicks from O'Riley and Hamed Traore.

From the spot, Goncalo Ramos, Vitinha, the full-back, and Desire Doue all converted successfully for PSG to seal a convincing penalty victory.

Now 14-time champions PSG, who met last season's Ligue 1 second-placed team Marseille after achieving a domestic double, have now won this trophy for the 12th time in the past 13 seasons.
