Doris Secures Spot in Irish Selection But Joe McCarthy Misses Out

Ireland rugby team selection news

Newly reappointed manager the Ireland coach has included skipper Caelan Doris in his Irish squad for the fall internationals, but Joe McCarthy is absent.

The captain, who has not played since having a shoulder operation in the start of May, has come back to provincial training, though his fitness is uncertain if he will be ready to play against New Zealand in Chicago on 1 November.

Lock McCarthy, however, was not considered after failing to recover from the foot injury suffered during the first British and Irish Lions Test against the Wallabies in July.

Ulster forward Cormac Izuchukwu and southern province wing Calvin Nash are also absent because of fitness concerns, while number 15 Keenan was previously excluded after undergoing a hip operation after the Lions tour.

Dublin province prop McCarthy - the brother of Joe - is the sole new member in the 34-man squad, however the Irish Rugby Football Union says new Munster duo Edogbo and Gleeson and previously capped Connacht wing Shayne Bolton will travel to the US as "cover".

After facing the All Blacks at Soldier Field in a repeat of their previous encounter, Ireland host the Brave Blossoms, Australia and world champions the Springboks in the Irish capital.

"There's an exciting look to the panel and there's an opportunity for the veteran members and for those who made their debuts on the recent tour to the Lelos and Portugal," said the coach, who returns to national team duties after a break to coach the Lions tour to Australia.

In a largely experienced squad, Leinster's Prendergast and the southern club's Jack Crowley will again vie for the starting fly-half position. The number 10 jersey is still available, with the two players poised to face off for the first time in the upcoming URC game at the Dublin venue.

Ciaran Frawley is the third fly-half chosen with Farrell opting against selecting Leinster's Byrne.

At scrum-half, Farrell has selected Lions tourist Gibson-Park and Casey, who led Ireland to the summer Test wins over the Lelos and the Lobos. There is also a recall for the western province's Blade, chosen to teammate Ben Murphy.

Robbie Henshaw, Aki, Ringrose and McCloskey form an experienced cohort of centre options. Jamie Osborne is a further choice in the midfield, though the 23-year-old is also a leading candidate to deputise for Keenan at number 15.

Outside backs Lowe, Hansen, O'Brien and Stockdale are included. The winger shone on his national team debut over the summer with a brace each in the victories over the Lelos and Portugal.

McCarthy is the only fresh addition in the Ireland pack. The loose-head prop has started a couple of his province's URC United Rugby Championship games this season and played in the second string's loss by England in Bristol previously.

McCarthy was selected in caretaker coach O'Connell's summer selection, but did not earn a international appearance.

Southern province lock Ahern, who earned his debut appearances in those Tests, is kept in the squad, while veteran Northern province second row Iain Henderson returns after missing the summer tour.

Jack Conan, who started all three Lions matches during the tour, is poised to deputise for the captain should the captain does not regain full fitness in time to play New Zealand.

The national team will meet in the capital on the start of the week before flying to Chicago on the following day.
