Blunders Made by World Heads of State Believing They're in Private

This week, Indonesia's President Prabowo Subianto thought he was having a private conversation with American leader Donald Trump at the Gaza peace summit in Egypt.

Instead, a hot-mic incident revealed Prabowo asking Trump to arrange a call with his son Eric, who serve as executives at the family business.

This was just one in a string of gaffes made by world leaders when they assume they're off the record.

Here are several additional memorable blunders:

Transplant Procedures and Everlasting Life

At a military parade in Beijing in early autumn, China's leader Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin were overheard discussing organ transplants as a approach for extending lifespan.

"Human organs can be repeatedly replaced. The more you extend your life, the younger you become, and you can even reach eternal life," the Russian translator was heard saying.

Xi, who was off camera, answered in Chinese: "Some predict that in the current era people may live to 150 years old."

'Sea Rising at Your Door'

Former Australian immigration minister Peter Dutton came under fire in 2015 when he made light about the situation of people in the Pacific facing ocean encroachment.

Dutton was conversing with former PM Tony Abbott, who had just returned from environmental talks with Pacific Island leaders in Port Moresby.

Noting that a meeting about refugees was running on "Cape York time", Abbott replied: "We had a bit of that up in Port Moresby."

Dutton added: "Schedules become irrelevant when you're about to have water lapping at your door."

The comments sparked outrage from regional nations and environmentalists, while the opposition Labor party demanded Dutton to apologise.

'Bigoted Woman'

While serving as UK PM Gordon Brown was on the trail in 2010, he faced a voter who challenged him on migration and the economy.

Remaining connected to a broadcast microphone when he got into his vehicle, Brown was heard saying: "That went terribly – they should never have put me with that individual. Who thought of that? Ridiculous."

Asked what she had said, he replied: "Everything, she was just a prejudiced person."

The scandal dominated headlines for an extended period and Brown ultimately lost the election.

'I Cannot Bear Netanyahu. He Lies.'

Former US president Barack Obama was in conversation at the international conference in Cannes in 2011 with then French president Nicolas Sarkozy when their comments about Israeli leader Benjamin Netanyahu were picked up by a active recording device.

Sarkozy stated: "I can't stand Netanyahu. He's a liar."

Per a version from a translator quoted by Reuters, Obama responded: "You've had enough but I have to deal with him frequently than you."

'Total ***hole'

A vintage recording incident from former White House hopeful George W. Bush occurred when he made a disparaging remark about a reporter from The New York Times.

The Republican presidential nominee was didn't realize that a microphone was live when he leaned over to Dick Cheney at a political event and remarked, "There's Adam Clymer, complete jerk from the New York Times."

Cheney responded: "Absolutely, that's true, big time."
